1st Semester Retrospective

1st Semester Graduation Project Night a Big Success

January 8, 2013 spelled A-N-X-I-E-T-Y and then R-E-L-I-E-F for eighty-one first semester seniors.  The Media Center filled to capacity with community volunteer judges, teachers, staff, and seniors. This fall's projects ranged from cooking to dental hygiene to wooden toys.  Thanks to all who participated to make the evening a memorable one!

Morehead PLANETS Program Comes to THS

Ms. Addie Jo Schonewolf from UNC-Chapel Hill's Morehead Planetarium and Science Center brought the PLANETS Program portable planetarium to THS on November 13th. The inflatable dome was set up in the gym and shows were scheduled to accommodate 25 students each from the Earth Sciences classes of Mr. Staton and Ms. David. Within the air-inflated dome, students sat on stadium cushions on the floor while the show was projected, like a movie around them on the inside surface of the dome.

The 45-minute presentation taught students about how the Earth, the stars, the sun and the 8 planets move in space. Students also learned about the Milky Way and the surrounding galaxies nearby as well as many constellations which are visible from Earth such as winter constellations in the northern hemisphere like Pegasus, Andromeda, Taurus and Orion. There was also some “time traveling” involved as Ms. Schonewolf showed what the stars in the night sky looked like several hundred years ago when Thuban and not Polaris was our North Star.

Earth Science students next semester will have their chance to experience the sky show in March when the Morehead PLANETS program returns for a second visit.
